Proposal paper Peer Review

In my proposal paper i feel like i need to work on my thesis and clear it up.
My concern is that i didnt have enough time i was rushing to finish my paper.
I feel that the last few paragraphs are not well defined and need more work.
I feel like i need to expand on my paper and lengthen it.

Planning essay 4

Looking back to essay 3 and planning to write essay 4 i think there are a good number of perspectives.
you have the people who are for it 100 %, those who oppose it, those who back the topic but think there need to be more regulation, and the undecided group.

My Solution.
In my perspective i believe that the solution to this problem would be to keep the guns as most Americans want but also strengthen the regulations that have been put on the guns themselves. The Government passed the right to carry law and from this law we as Americans have the right to own a gun. even though the government cant remove guns from the American people they can put heavier regulations on the guns that would prevent guns flooding the streets of our nation and low crime rates.

 in writing your policy paper you would take the stand that you choose support. In the process i would choose the stand which backs the topic but also thinks there needs to be more regulations.

I believe that i have enough research for this stand on the topic. to me this was the easiest stand to find information on and it was also the stand that i support. i think i have enough research for write my paper but i also think gathering more research wouldn't be a bad thing to do.

From Exploratory to Policy/Proposal

From getting the opportunity to correct my paper i chose to set back for a day clear my mind and then reread my paper and clean it up a little. I decided to add more research to my paper and fine tune the information that i already had. From doing this process i lengthened my paper at the same time strengthened it.
Yes after looking at my peer review i went back in and decided to make a few changes and tweaks. this process helped clear my paper up and it made it easier to read a smooth flowing paper. I found that the research in my paper was the strongest element and how it tied into the argument i was trying to get to the reader.
 My biggest concern is the depth that my paper has after getting started on the research the first few things i found we relatively easy to find and then it became hard to find topics and works to choose from.

Carlson, Kierstan Lee. Fighting firearms with Fire in the OAS: A Critical Evaluation of the Inter-American Convention Against the Manufacturing of and Trafficking in Firearms, Ammunition, and Other Related Materials. American University International Law Review. 2010. Web. November 2, 2011.

In this article it explains the importance of bringing the trafficking of illegal weapons to a halt. Carlson tells the reader that there is a legitimate market for the small arms and light weapons. But there are also extreme amounts of trafficking happening in the background on the black and grey markets. And from this ease of access to these arms it is becoming a danger to the people on our streets of our towns. Carlson also tells us what has become of countries in Latin American and how the trafficking of arms had affected these regions.

In Lott’s essay he states they “The solution is clear: more regulations or even the complete eliminations of guns.” In my perspective I believe that the complete elimination of guns would be going a bit far but I would strongly encourage the strengthening of the regulations and the laws behind owning a gun. He tells us that if guns are placed into an environment that would be more prone to out rages of anger there is a higher chance of someone dying in the situation. He also gives the facts of how owners protect themselves from being attacked using guns between 700,000 and 3.5 million times each year. I believe that if you have the right training and know how skills of operating a gun that it is perfectly legal to own a gun.

This essay is being pushed to give the owner of a gun the knowledge of what right s he or she has and how they have the right to own a gun. These rights are extremely important because it comes from the Second Amendment of the Bill of Rights of the United States. Each individual has the opportunity to interpret the amendment as they choose and have the right to own a gun but in having that right they should have the knowledge how to use it and operate the weapon. This essay tells us how the people have every right to own a gun and the government can’t take that from them but they do posses the power to stricken and set regulations that the people must abide by.

A review of International Evidence” essay they talk about the relation that a firearm being widely available to the public has any affect of the rates of murder, suicide and violence itself. On one had a person would say yes 80% of the crimes and 90% of the murders are caused my guns but are they; the saying guns don’t kill people, people kill people comes into play here as the study showed that guns aren’t the cause of the crimes, murders and violence it is the social issues and economical factors that play the major role in crimes. The is an important study because it give the officials of our government the knowledge that putting stricter demands of the regulations of gun ownership is a strongly encouraged thing and would be a better thing the long run.

In a national study brought forth by Dahlberg, Ikeda, and Krensnow in 2004 they found that having a forearm in the home puts the person at a greater risk of dying from a homicide. It also brings in the conclusion of one dying form suicide and the percent was greater in homes that had guns from those homes that didn’t have guns. But all together they found that having a firearm in the home greatly raised the percent of a homicide or suicide occurring in a family.

In this article they state both side of the situation and tell us that increasing the ownership of guns may lead to the increase of crime in our nation but then we see the other side of the situation where is the ownership of guns is broader, then the potential owners of the guns may be some of the future victims and they may be able to protect themselves in a case of need. They come to the agreement that if the criminal has the knowledge that any victim that they choose to victimize may be armed then the crime rate will decrease in theory and this still give the human the right-to-carry.

In the compliment of data from 1977 to 2000 on a county level for the entire US Plassmann and Whitley found that since the right-to-carry law the crime rate has reduced each year at a steady rate. In looking back on their work we come to realize that there demonstration of looking at crime rate versus the right-to-carry law was true to the specifics until 1997. From here the rates were skewed and misleading as their models predictions were extremely off.

In Polsby’s article Firearms Cost, Firearms Benefits and The Limits of Knowledge, he tells us that even though the crime rates in the United States have been dropping constantly over the past twenty years people today are still concerned. He tells us that the crime rates today are well below the rate of that in the late 70’s and even below that of most of the 20’s. but the discussion keeps coming back up and people are still worried about the crime rates and Polsby looked into the rates of crime being taken place he understands and sheds some light on the situation he splits the rates up into two things the quantity and the quality of crimes. Even though the quantity of the crimes has continued to go down each year there are still big and horrible crimes being taken place? From people being able to carry firearms it has dropped the gun victims but there will always be other crimes taking place in the world that involve guns where no one gets hurt and the gun is never fired but it’s the power that the gun has and why it is a weapon that can cause life or death it can change the outcome of any crime if it is fired but the fact that guns cause crimes isn’t true it’s more of how they are used in those crimes.

Cotton tells us that the guns that are in the home are more times than often used against fellow home members that against intruders and with the promotion of these guns there should also be the promotion of the safety of storage. If a homeowner is going to have a gun then the homeowner should also have a devise to store the weapon in and be securely lock from just a pad lock to a electronic lock, this would insure that the gun doesn’t get stolen or used in the wrong manor.

Exploratory Essay
A.     Does playing more than one sport help or hinder children's athleticism?
Over the years i have hear this topic thrown around and 50% of the time i heard that it was good to play more than one sport and 50% of the time i heard it would hinder the kids abilities. i feel that researching and getting a better understanding of this would be intriguing to an audience of the present day parents and to the future parents.
D.     i feel right at home on this topic growing up my dad pretty much kept me focused on baseball and baseball only. I think that it helped me more than hindered me in my athletic ability. there are some draw backs in not being able to play more sports at the same time but it personally didn't bother me that much. my perspective on the situation is kind of different from how i was raised, shockingly, i feel that you should let your child play all the sports possible at a younger age and by the time he or she is nearing their teen years focus towards one particular sport and strive to excel in that particular sport. so in the initial response i believe it is true 50/50 but its more of the have a diverse range of sports at a younger age and the at the teens focus it towards one sport and fine tune your skills.

1. he tells us that there are a 3 set parameters that defines a sport.
it must use a large motor skill
it must have an objective scoring system
it must use nothing more complicated than a simple machine, such as a baseball bat or a vault pole.
2. It would be important to have a set guidline for the naming an activity a sport. It should have a list of criteria and it wil have to meet a sertain percent of the total criteria to be considered and deemed a sport.
baseball is a widely known sport because it involves two teams battling for the victory, it involves skill and endurance. but at the same time when people look at chess they dont exactly see a sport but when you think about it chess is two people challenging one another for the win and it involves strategy and like all soprts it involves practice.

I decided to lok us a few different things.
Issue of hunting illegally in SC

issue of the constant tax raise in our state and nation wide.

I found it easier to research the issue on illegal hunting mainly because i was more interested in the topic. recently we had a poacher on our land and he was caught by the game warden. i feel that it is an issue not nonly state wide but also nation wide. where ever there is animals to hunt there will always be someone trying to bend the rules and get a better chance at taking an animal.

Working Title: Time Travels

Intro/Thesis: Today we live in a visual dominated culture. Advertisements utilize techniques involved with visual communication. When comparing two printed advertisements it is important to understand the way the images work on their own and team up with written text to create an argument intended to influence a specific audience. In comparing these two advertisements the realization of how and what ways watches are being directed towards is fascinating. As for who the intended audience, these watches are directed differently one to the older sophisticated man and one to the younger sportier person but at the same time advertising the same item.

Outline:

I.                    The audiences that the advertisement pieces are aiming towards.

a.       The first piece of advertisement is being portrayed to the older and more successful audience.

b.      In the second advertisement it is communicating its message to the younger and more athletic type of audience. It is also being directed to the more rugged audience.

II.                  The type of fonts and the color choice in the text on the advertisement.

a.       The first advertisement the font type and color is a clean and strong sounding. The color of the text is white and stands out against the background.

b.      The second advertisement has a cool and new look to it the font is a very legible text and stands out mainly because it is electric blue against a black background.

III.                The slogan of the advertisements both display what and who the items are being portrayed towards.

a.       The first piece gives the slogan “THE GREAT ONE” to me this slogan is very strong and gives its statement very well. It tells you who the intended audience is, the higher end audience.

b.      The second piece’s slogan is “DESIGNED TO TEST LIMITS” stating that these items can withstand anything. It’s durable and reliable and you can put your trust in this item.

IV.                How the logos send a message to their intended audience.

a.       The first advertisement piece’s logo ties in extremely well with the background. In the logo it has the symbolism having plane wings and an anchor along with a B for Breitling.

b.      The second advertisement is just a plan and simple look it does not have anything that sticks out

V.                  The Background of the items and how it correlates to the audience.

a.       In the first item the background is a plane and on a lake with trees and a clean, wealthy, educated, distinguished but yet rugged looking man.

b.      The second item has a male athlete playing soccer in the background and he look as if he is moving so fast the his image is being distorted through time. It is sporting a young athletic and determined sports enthusiast.

Rhetorical Analysis 2

In mt analysis of two articles i chose to talk about watches that are being portrayed to different types of people one being from a sports illustrated magazine and the other being from a car and driver magazine.The first ad is showing a sport type watch its sleek and has a guy kicking a soccor ball in the background and is being appealed to a younger audience. The second watch comes from the car and driver magazine and it appeals to an older and wealthier audience the man wearing the watch looks as if he has money he is dressed nicely and has his own airplane.

That Mark McGwire took steroids. I conveyed it explicitly.

• What kinds of visual elements did you chose to include? What is their purpose? 

A picture of Mark in court and a cartoon picture of him with a small kid. 

Mark stating that he never took steroids and the cartoon picture shows how he is massive and had to of taken steroids.

• How did you manipulate the text (fonts, colors, size, positioning on the card)? Why?

I made the color vibrant and the text a little bold and a little larger than normal.

I did it just to make the words stand out.

• How did you want to portray the persona you assumed?  

That he did indeed take steroids.

• How did you want to the viewer to feel about the secret?  

I wanted the viewer to notice that it was a funny but serious because later he did in fact take steroids.

Food Around The World

Peter Menzel's gallery of photos shows how different countries around the world eat different amounts of food each week and different types of food all together. He shows how some families live off small portions of food for an entire week and in one picture he shows the amount an American family eats in a week and it is substantially more that any other photo. He shows how in some countries the people dont waste anything they use all of the parts of animals when they eat and they will eat what ever they have available whether it be cooked or raw. The amount of food consumed by families across the world change on the location. He is telling us that when humans need to eat we will eat what ever is available to us.

The Pleasures of Eating

1. That every dorm have some source of sunlight being able to shine in. A porch or window, or even a balcony some way to have a light source and have the potential to grow some sort of plant.
2. Making your own food rather than going to a fast food place. Making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich cooking eggs ect.  
3.try to buy organic food that is from local farms. here we could go buy our food from the local farmers market.
4.make a trip to the local farms and see if you can buy directly from them.
5.gain some knowledge to what is served in your student cafeteria.
6.learn what is the best way to grow plants in your window seal or on a balcony.
7.learn and observe from your friends what they do and what they plant to get an idea what does well in your amount of sunlight available.

The Cooking Ape

In Elisabeth Townsend's story ,the cooking ape, she tells us how the simple fire has change who we are as humans. She tells us how a long time ago it took much more effort for humans to eat and digest their foods. She tells us how there may have even been a time when humans knew what fire was but had not yet used fire to cook their foods. But she tells us that when humans were about to use fire to cook their food then the physical appearance of the human body changes over time the brain and body grew therefore humans burned more calories and needed more calories. So, over time the body grew and changed. For this essay i get that fire directly related to the human physical appearance that we as humans are today.

CR Chapter 4 sept 12

1.   I decided to read "Meet the Radical Homemaker" by Shannon Hayes. From reading her article i decided to first get a little background information on her and i found out that she was a farmer and also a writer out of the New England area. In compiling a rhetorical analysis i first determine the point that she is trying to get across to the reader. I then look at her article and figure out who her audience is and ask myself do i believe she is giving a strong subject.IO also would look and see if she is speaking to the appeal of reason or emotion and from my readings i believe that she is speaking to both in some way or another. And lastly i would have to determine if her article fits to the circumstances, times, and does it mesh well with the audience, to me her article is relevant to all these.
2.    She wants to show the value of homemaking in our actual homes as well as our society and economy as a whole.
3.    Her strategies go build her argument come from her knowledge and exploration of the subject in my opinion. She not only put a post on a website she also went through her mail and began to visit others like herself and her family.
4.     i feel that her ethos behind the subject was strong she had the credibility to the subject because she herself is a homemaker and she made the effort to do research on other homemakers. her pathos towards the subject was strong as well i see her passionin the text as she explains how families can get by with less mainly because she is able to get by with less she has the right to say it because she is in the moment of doing so herself.

In Class

i believe that the author is primarily driven to encourage us to think about what we are eating. Not only in the food that is in front of us but also in how the food got to where it is at that moment. How the animal was treated before its journey to the table. he prompts us to realize the affect of our readiness to eat has upon the livestock.

Rhetorical Analysis

1.    In planning to rhetorically analyse, "The Pleasure of Eating" by Wendell Berry i would first read his essay thoroughly. From his essay I see that he is very repellent to processed food so from now knowing this i venture to understand why he is against processed food. As I do a little research of Wendell Berry I realize he is a Farmer and also a write. So, from this knowledge I see that his argument of the plants and animals being treated better is backed from his experience that he would not want to eat something that has been treated cruelly. I believe in his mind he sees eating an animal that has been feed and raised in a small cubical that the livestock doesn't have enough room to turn around in is eating a cruelly treated or even beaten  animal. He bring to attention that people in the urban areas don't realize ,that from the animal living on the farm till the food showing up on their plate, there is a lot going on in the back ground and many stages in between. I would then go on to explain how he shares his opinion with his audience and also to whom is his audiences.
2.    The pleasure of eating doesn't come from eating the food but from the knowledge of where and what the food has been through.
3.   He gives us the knowledge of the cow in a stable where it couldn't even turn around and how that is cruelty he says that he would much rather eat meat that was from a happy and able to roam a wide open pasture. He gives us the thought that if we knew were and how our food was treated as livestock then we would have total freedom in eating your food.
4.   From reading his ethos I don't really understand where he is coming from but after doing a little extra research i understand his side of the argument being a framer and taking care of his livestock. In terms of his pathos i feel that he was strong is stating his pathos. he directly related the audience with his feeling towards the situation. He strongly showed his love for animals and how they are treated  even in the process for being raised for food.

Lady Power

In Nancy Bauer's story talks about Lady Gaga and Cindy Sherman and their familiarization. Cindy Sherman is an American Photographer in the Film Industry. Cindy started out and a painter in college and then realized she didn't want to copy other peoples works. so, she picked up a camera and started taking picture for herself. Her art that she created after she stopped painting was pure it was strictly what she thought was interesting it was her own work. I think she and Lady gaga are similar in the aspect of taking their individualization and running with it maybe not in the same direction but the reasons they were driven in their directions were based off the same reasons, everyone is different and individual. I think Bauer's comparison in her essay is accurate in someways but in others i don't think Cindy and Lady Gaga were totally similar.

Womb For Rent

In this short essay by Ellen Goodman she mostly talks about how surrogacy between wealthy countries and third world countries. She comments on how women in Anand will earn between $5,000-$7,000 for the delivery of a child and int heir normal day to day life they would have earned $25 a month for crushing glass in a factory. She also brings up the conclusion that surrogacy is becoming an international trade. I feel that the pathos in this argument is negative she is telling us the outcomes of the surrogacy. she portrays that surrogacy is bad and how its always the wealthy taking advantage or using the poor people of the third world.
What is the writer's purpose?
Is the writer trying to change readers' views by offering a new interception of a phenomenon, calling readers to action, or trying to muster votes or inspire future investigations?
From this question i think that she is not so much trying to change the readers' perception on the subject but trying to enlighten on the information about the subject.
Well i found it interesting and disturbing that when i realized that it is unjustly to sell yourself or your children but when it comes to surrogacy it is becoming a business that is flourishing.

Background of Catherine Breecher

I learned that Catherine was mostly driven to teach and spread the word about how a woman should be the teacher in developing the knowledge and people skills of the next generation. She was the duaghterof a Presbyterian Minister well known for his evangelism. She had a well known sister Harriet Beecher Stow who wrote Uncle Toms Cabin. At the age of 16 she had to take over the houshold and take care of the faimly.

From the essay "On the preservation of a good temper in a housekeeper", by Cartharine E. Beecher she tells us how the attitude a wife in the family directally reflects onto the entire family. She tells us that if she has a equable and cheerfule temper that it will reflect upon the family. If the housekeeper has a negative attitude thn the family  will be hindered by it. She tells us that a housekeeper can not maintain a quiet and cheerful state of mind. The quietness will turn into an evil frame of mind and will always over come her cheerful side.
Breecher gives us a list of considerations that may aid in prepairing a woman to meet her daily crosses:
1. A woman, who has charge of a large household should regard her duties as dignified, important, and difficult.(CR 250)
2. A housekeeper should feel that she has great difficulties to meet and overcome.(CR 250)
3.A woman deliberately to calculate on having her best-arranged plans.(CR 251)
4.To form all plans and arrangements in consistency with the means at command, and the character of those around.(CR 251)
5.It's very important to have consideration of the systems of the economy, and neatness.(CR 251)

In Eli Wiesel and Richard D. Heffner's story essay "Am I My Brother's Keeper?" they explain their definitions of information and knowledge and how the two are intertwined. They explain to us that information is all the data that we absorb from the technology in the world and the knowledge we receive from the information is all based on how we interpret and act upon the given information. In the essay it tells us that information on its on is just facts that are told to us or we read but knowledge is the information that we use and recall to our knowledge.

        In my family i feel ethat as time goes on the generation gap is being narrowed by technology. My parents at first didnt know how to text and now my parents have become more like your average ordinary teen they have smart phones they text, email, and go on facebook. i have even been able to teach my grandfather how to text and he also goes on facebook now. Between my brother and my self i think that we have used technology to bring our family closer. Even though I am away at college my mother can still use technology to keep intough with me she post something on facebook, shoot a text to me, or call me. For as my parents being equally involved in technology i would have to say they are not as equal but they are getting closer. For Brother i se him on the same level or maybe a little higher. Beig 8 years younger than me he has the advantage of new techology as a kid rather that the tehnology that i had. But as a entire family i see technology bringing use together even if we are physically nt beside one another.

1.    In Matt Richtel's essay, "Hooked on Technology, and Paying a Price" it states " the technology is rewiring our brain" in this context in my belief i think this statement is referring to how technology impacts our life. When I think of technology rewiring my brain i instinctively think of how technology impacts my day to day lifestyle. I see how i think about situations and how someone 50 years ago would have handled the same situation. I saw well lets go look at the internet and figure out how to do it or let me call someone and technology has changed the way i go about things compared to someone 50 years ago.
In the text he shows a few reasoning for backing his conclusion. He states, " More broadly, cellphones and computers have transformed life. they let people escape from their cubicles and work anywhere.". He also uses the reference to media such as emails and TV's. the television and the computer have been various ways of expanding ones knowledge.
2.    In the essay Mt. Campbell is overly addicting to technology and from the essay we receive that his family is direct affected by that his obligations to his family are not met. And also from his addiction to video games his son has also become addicted to being on the computer and become incoherent to what is going on around his with in his family and in his school work. In the end as all humans use technology we sometimes get lost in what we are doing at the moment and can spend countless hours doing one little thing on the computer, watching television or even playing video games.
3.    " Myth of Multitasking"
The myth of multitasking is basically telling us that the traditional way of thinking about multitasking is a good thing that if you can manage to multitask then you can manage to complete more things than an average person. But there is also the thoughts that someone who has mastered the skill of multitasking is someone who focuses on everything so for instance there is a question like in the exercise Mr. Ophir constructed where is tells you to determine if the red boxes change position and the display shows red boxes but also it shows blue boxes the non-multitaskers come out on top. This is because the non-multitaskers is able to set aside the blue boxes and not even think about them and continue on with the question, but the multitasking have the hardest time completing this mainly because being a multitaskers they choose to examine every aspect and cant set aside the blue boxes and in the end the exercise takes longer.

Get Smarter

From reading "Get Smarter" by Jamais Cascio I see the use of drugs to further better ones intelligence is cheating in my point of view. I don’t believe in Cascio’s theory as taking these drugs are a productive way enhancing ones knowledge. I believe that if the drug is not readily available to everyone that it is considered cheating as it is not an equal chance for everyone. If the statement in question 3,”it’s no more cheating than getting a faster computer or better education” is correct then why is this drug not readily available to the public. Anyone can go to the local electronic store and upgrade your computer or take classes to better your education, but not everyone can have access to a drug of this power to medical enhance their intelligence. So in my opinion if it is not available and everyone doesn’t have the same chance then it is not fair to me.

I found it interesting that an argument is not just an exchange of rash words between one people it is much more in depth than that. An Argument requires a justification of its claim, it has both a product and a process, and combines seeking and persuasion of an answer. There are two types explicit and implicit. Explicit states its claim and implicit may not even be an argument at all.

Writing Assignment 1

My Best and Worst Writing Experience

            Defining the difference between my best and worst writing experience is defined by a few aspects. First, the ease of writing the work is it a smooth flow of work onto the paper or was tough to put my thought down. What was my audience as the reader reaction was it good did the reader connect with my writing. Or was the reader just lost and they just could not understand my work. And lastly was my work graded well or was it shut down.

            In my best writing I was in English 101 and I was writing a narrative paper. It was the easiest assignment I have ever written. The words just came out and flowed on the paper easier than ever. My paper just meshed well with the readers and the grade of this paper was one of my best.

            My worst experience was a combination of a few things. My paper was hard to write it took hours to complete and it was also a poorly formed written paper. The paper was choppy and it did not register well with the others. The readers had a hard time understanding and following my paper the readers were mostly confused throughout the entire work. And my grade directly reflected my paper the professor shot down my paper and gave me a pour grade.

            In my eyes I feel the worst experience affected my life more. It affected my life in two different ways it put me down at that moment but it also helped me to strive to not be put in that situation. It helps me strive to do my best and to work hard to produce my best work every time I have a paper.
